Selfie Awareness on display
On the way home from Mission High School today, I saw this installation on the (de)Appropriation wall on Valencia Street by the peer resources class from Buena Vista / Horace Mann K-8.
The class has “worked on a project, "What picture would THEY choose?” The purpose of this project is to create an image of the media’s corruption in false assumptions of our character, actually blocking our true image and protecting the police’s actions towards the victim. We present two pictures, one that represents our stereotypical character and one in contrast which defies the identity the media gives us. This is an exampe of how the police treated Michael Brown. On the news, they used stereotypical pictures of him, and one that we found wasn’t even of him!“
The students then posted two pictures each of themselves demonstrating how quickly we can apply stereotypes to what we see.
I think their installation pairs well with the Google Bus #affluenza posters. Are the tech industry employees getting to know the kids growing up along their commute?
Clearly, this is a great project to strengthen the students’ literacy across mediums (a Common Core standard).
* I credit communications maven Lauren Girardin for the term "Selfie Aware.”
