“Precita Tree” auction for Maximum Fun
mixed media on paper, 11″ x 14″, 2015
UPDATE: and now: ”Punk Rock Brunch”
mixed media on paper, 11″ x 14″, 2015
AND one more 11″ x 14″ picture illustrating your choice of Maximum Fun Podcast episodes
While I paint I often listen to people with interesting viewpoints talking about compelling topics. I get much of this from the podcasts in the Maximum Fun network.
There are shows like the Memory Palace, which brings history history alive in a visceral and poetic way (and which I’d recommend as a great resource for teachers), and shows like My Brother My Brother and Me, which is just silly and funny (and which should never be played in a classroom setting).
I want to support the Max Fun network for their annual fund drive (it is listener supported), but I’ve got more art than money. Please use the comments below to place your bid on this these special pieces of artwork.
What does this picture have to do with Maximum Fun podcasts?
This is a tree in Precita Park in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. Jesse Thorn often talks about growing up on nearby Tiffany Street on the show “Jordan, Jesse Go.” Jordan often mocks Jesse for talking so much about his San Francisoc childhood - it’s one of the running gags that make them so endearing to their thousands of listeners. I might be one of the few listeners who loves hearing about the experience of a creative youth growing up in the city - a population I often work with.
What makes this picture so special?
Precita Park is the place where Carlos Santana says, ‘it all began.’ When he was growing up in the neighborhood, that’s where he practiced guitar jamming with friends.
Precita Park is where I saw Michael Franti and Spearhead play immediately after 9-11. I remember being struck by a powerful speech by a young organizer named Van Jones.
Spearhead would play there again for an Earth Day show. I was sitting at a table for CELLspace when Anthony Kiedis emerged from his van to jam with Bob Weir and then Woody Harrelson came out to start tossing cartoons of hemp milk to the audience.
I made this piece as a study for a painting I was making for a neighbor who found me through the Bernalwood blog. That’s the same blog that keeps me updated about all important tree news in the park.
